Plan the repair before the first cut

Fit panels carefully, then protect the repair
A good panel still needs good preparation. Strip paint, filler and corrosion from the mating areas until clean metal is exposed. Repair the supporting structure first, then trial-fit the outer panel with clamps, self-tapping screws or temporary fasteners as appropriate. Keep checking the gaps as you work.
Avoid running a long continuous weld along thin Mini steel. Short, spaced tack welds reduce heat build-up and help prevent distortion. Move around the repair, allow the metal to cool, and keep the panel aligned. A distorted wing or door skin can take far longer to straighten than the few minutes saved by rushing the welding.
Where panels overlap, use a suitable weld-through primer on clean mating faces where required, then seam-seal properly after welding. The rear of the repair is just as important as the visible side. Bare steel, unsealed lap joints and untreated cavities are invitations for corrosion to return.
Once the repair is complete, use a sensible paint system, seam sealer and stone-chip protection in exposed areas. Apply cavity wax inside sills, box sections, door bottoms and other enclosed spaces after paint has cured. Keep drain holes open. A Mini that cannot shed water will eventually find a way to rust again.
